SUNDAY & MONDAY

The first two days were days of practice. Competition started on Tuesday morning early. There were 26 states represented, 490 kids participating in all disciplines, with 86 shotgun competitors in all. Our squad did very well in practices.

TUESDAY

Tuesday was the first day of competition for our shotgun squad. Sporting Clays was the game of the day. With 86 shooters in all, the competition was both challenging and an all-day ordeal. Our team shot well considering the class of shooters that Texas and some other states sent to the 4-H competition. At the end of the day, Tyler Goodman came out ranked as 6th in the nation. While the Texas competitors captured the 1st. & 2nd. place rankings, Tyler's shooting left the other two Texas competitors removing their empty hulls in frustration.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday found our shotgun squad standing on the skeet field in competition. At this level of competition, 3 missed birds out of 100, and you are well out of the ranking. Shanna Nicholson shot her personal best with a score of 93. Our other shooters come out of competition with respectable scores. Two Texas competitors captured the 1st. & 2nd. place rankings after a tie of perfect scores of 100, and a shoot-off that lasted for near 50 rounds each.

THURSDAY

Thursday was the last day of competition on the Trap fields. Once again, our squad performed well, but did not capture a ranking. Like skeet, if you miss here, it is all over as far as ranking is concerned. Ashley Ward did shoot a personal best with a perfect 25 round, and was rewarded by having her PRETTY pink visor shot to pieces. The trap competition 1st. place ranking was captured by a 110lb. young lady from South Dakota. She did not shoot an expensive shotgun, but was as smooth as glass. Her score of 100 strait put away any hopes of any of the more advanced shooters from Texas taking home the gold metal. It was joy to watch.

IN SUMMERY

In short, our kids put up respectable scores for the competition and ability in which they found themselves. They gained valuable experience that cannot come from any other level of competition. And most of all, they found themselves forming a lasting bond that can only come from collective desires and efforts of competition. Tyler, Shanna, & Ashely will continue their shooting careers, and will be shooting in 4-H State Competition the end of the month. Tyler will be helping Tim Puckett & I in August, with our young shooters. Ashley will be doing the same with a young 4-H group of shooters on the coast.

Thank you each for all that you did to help these young people arrive at this one point in their lives. They are much better people for their efforts, and we are better people for helping them to reach for their dreams. Regardless of score, rankings, and other timely markings of achievements, these four young shooters are a class act, and wonderful representatives of our love of Lord and love of firearms. It has been an honor & a pleaser to be a part of their journey.

God bless,
James Goodman
